Trentham Woman Wins £3251 On Double

PALMERSTON NORTH, Jan. 13. Mrs J. Bronte from Trentham scooped the on-course double pool on the concluding day of the Pahiatua Racing Club’s annual meeting at Woodville today. She held the only IDs ticket on the successful combination. The 12/12 favourite In the Pongaroa Highweight. King’s Fire, paved the way for a return at the rate of £6502 19s for £1 and the outsider but one Mutual scored narrowly In the second leg, the Hamua Hack Handicap. In a total double pool of £3934, £29 10s was invested on King’s Fire. The holder of the only ticket on Mutual was rewarded with £3251 9s 6d for her 10s investment. On the win and place machine King’s Fire paid £77 5s and £l7 5s 6d and Mutual paid £3O 12s 6d and £7 Ils 6d. There was another surprise in the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the President's Handicap, when Gold Brick won. He was the eleventh favourite in a field of 18 and paid £34 Ils 6d and £8 14s for a win and place. This double was completed by No Boots in the Newmarket Handicap. The return for £1 being £ll7 13s 6d. Marco James and No Boots were the only winning favourites. Only two others gained minor placings In addition to King's Fire, Mutual and Gold Brick. My Delight was also at long odds in the Tararua Hack Handicap in which she deadheated for first with Methodical and paid £29 19s and £l3 3s 6d. The weather was fine and hot and the track was hard and fast. The totalisator handled £53,742 as against £58.545 10s last year, a decrease of £4803 10s. Gold Brick at Good Odds Gold Brick was at good odds in the President's Handicap, his first win for the season. With a round to go Selection was the pacemaker from Black Oak, Russett, Maquana and Arawana bunched then Ellens Pride, Corsican, Belle Marlin, Gold Brick, National, Gloncarrig, Alonsun, Big Blow, Mireusonta, Pondicherry. Diavolo and Regal. Stuart. Port Wine was a long way back last.

Ellen’s Pride joined Selection at the six furlongs and went clear soon after. She led past the halfmile from Selection, Gold Brick. Russett, Black Oak, Maquana, National, Alonsun, Diavolo, Arawana, and Mireusonta. Gold Brick improved soon after and was almost on terms with Ellen’s Pride at the straight entrance. Gold Brick went clear soon after and though National challenged strongly Gold Brick ran on well to win by three-quarters of a length. Ellen’s Pride was only a long neck away third and Arawana was fourth. Then came Rqssett, Regal Stuart, Maquana, Black Oak, Mireusonta. Pondicherry, Port Wine and Belle Marlin. Big Blow was last. No Boots Gets Up No Boots finished resolutely on the inside to win the Newmarket Handicap narrowly. Red Stripe drifted soon after the start. The early pace was made by Mary Gilpin from No Boots. Figurine,Ballador, Iceberg, Spiborough and Privy Council with Red Stripe four lengths back last. At the half-mile Iceberg was on terms with Mary Gilpin and they were followed by Ballador. Figurine, No Boots and Spiborough with gaps to Privy Council and Red Stripe. The order was the same into the straight. Mary Gilpin ran on gamely but No Boots got in the deciding stride and beat her by a nose. Only a short neck away Ballador was third and Spiborough was a close fourth.
