FUTURE OF CONGO

Belgian King’s Views

(New Zealand Press Association) BRUSSELS, January 10. King Baudouin of Belgium, in a radio speech, said that his recent trip to the Belgian Congo had convinced him that the future political structure of the colony should be a confederation. He said that during his 16-day trip he met representatives of the most diverse groups. “I listened to their words and gathered their opinions,” he said. “These declarations have established that the general wish is that the future state should be based on a very large autonomy of provinces with defined frontiers and laws adapted to their regional characteristics.” The King’s call for confedera-

tion of the six Congo Provinces under a central government would obviously be the basis of the Belgian Government’s proposals when it met Congolese leaders at a round-table conference in Brussels about January 20, the British United Press said.
