CYCLONES IN PORT VILA
Australia Sends Supplies
(New Zealana Press Association) SYDNEY, January 10. A second Royal Australian Air Force Hercules transport plane left Richmond yesterday carrying troops and emergency supplies to the cyclone-stricken town of Port Vila, in the New Hebrides. The first Hercules, which left on Friday, returned to Richmond yesterday. Trained Army and R.A.A.F. observers, who inspected damage caused by the cyclone, are expected to make a detailed report tomorrow.
Australian Army rescue and relief teams are expected to stay at Port Vila for a month to help in the town’s gigantic repair and clean-up campaign. An R.A.A.F. spokesman said today that 70 Australian troops would have been flown in by the middle of the week.
One of the troops’ first jobs was to install a temporary freshwater pipeline between the town and the French hospital, which had had its water supply cut off by the cyclones, he said. The troops also would help in the repair of bridges, roads, and homes.
