BOWLS Favoured Players Put Out Of Pairs

(N«w Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 12. As the field in the pairs section of the New Zealand bowling championships was reduced to 11 with two lives and 66 one-lifers today, many favoured players were eliminated. The weather was brilliantly fine and the greens again fast.

The bright sunshine was oppressive for many bowlers, many of whom had to play four games during the day.

A start is to be made tomorrow on the singles championship, which is also based on the two-life system. The pairs will be continued on Friday morning and in the afternoon the quarter-finals of the fours will be held at the Kaituna upper green.

T. T. Skoglund (Carlton) lost one of his two lives today when he was beaten 17-13 by A. Westfield (Balmacewan). Westfield earlier in the day had close w ins over A. R. Pope (Richmond) 18-14, and A. D. Lawless (Kaikorai) 18-17, and was unbeaten with two lives. The 1958 Empire Games representative, W. H. Hampton (Nae Nae) won two games comfortably at North-east Valley, but was later eliminated by E. W. F. Grimman (Caversham). W. P. O’Neill (Cartion) gave fine demonstrations of what an art there is in playing good bowls at Opoho in the match against J Kilpatrick (Kaituna). O’Neill was ably assisted by his lead, H. Roy- The Carlton pair scored 10 in the five ends against Kilpatrick and another 22 on the last nine ends assured him a big win. His second, third and fourth games produced nearly as big a margin. Dailey Eliminated

A former All Black, W. C. Dailey (Fendalton), just headed A. Burke (Amberley), in his first game at Opoho, but had to bow to a Kaitangata pair skipped by F. E. G. Malcolmson. Dailey came back with another win in the afternoon over L. J. Hoskin (Pleasant Point), but in his last game of the day was eliminated by A. A. Cook (Shirley), 26-11. The skip of the champion Tui Park four in 1956, M- R. Buchan, was eliminated at the Logan Park green when he lost to C. B. Chettelburg (Port Chalmers) 16-14 in the last game. A previous winner of all the Dominion titles, C. I. A. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.), lost this first game at Opoho to another Christchurch combination skipped by A. A. Cook (Shirley). Spearman was unfortunate that a mistake cost him this match. Although one down in the match on the eighteenth end, he was lying three shots and made no effort with his last bowl, thinking that the match would conclude with that end. But Cook squared the game on the twentieth and took a single on the last to take Spearman’s first life. Spearman was fully extended by F. Osborn (Port Chalmers’* and was eliminated in his third game by a Central Otago pair skipped by J. A. Campbell (Millers Flat). B. Stowell (Kai Toa, Timaru) created an upset in one of the morning matches at the Green Island green by beating the 1953 champion. R. E. Pilkington (Balmoral). Stowell lost his first life in an afternoon match, however Pilkington retained his second life with two improved displays at the same green in the afternoon. He scored an impressive win over the strong Fendalton pair skipped by W. S. Roberts, 19-18. in his second match, and later beat H. C. Hartley (Fairfield) 28-15. M Matheson (North-east Valley) played fine bowls for his three wins on the same green. Win For Marinovich. The winning skip of the 1948 pairs competition. M. A. Marinovich (Gratia), whose four was eliminated last week, showed impressive form at Port Chalmers today after losing his first life the previous day. He scored three decisive wins over T. F. Chapman (Christchurch R.S.A.), W. Young (Canterbury) and P. N Rendel (St Clair) before clashing with. R. Murray (Cobden), another one-lifer who won three matches at Port Chalmers. Marinovich was too good for Murray in the last game of the day at Port Chalmers with a fine 21-8 win. Ellerslie’s R. McDonald proved that his high reputation is justified with some fine drawing and running shots at the North-east Valley green. His closest game of the day was his first against A. F Rawlinson (St. Clair), whom he beat 16-14. McDonald won comfortably against J. M Lamond (Burwood) 24-14 and was as dominant against H B. Bills (Leith), whom he beat 22-10. He completed a good day with a 17-15 win against J B Rennie (Christchurch)

The Leith combination of M P Davanney and J. W. Watkins was

in excellent form at Kaituna Na v 2. They eliminated the father and son pair of P. C. and P. O. S. Skos.. lund (Wellington) in the j UI session with first-class bowling !oL on the fast green. Davanney and .. Watkins drew frequent applau* from the good-sized crowd witt in s their accurate placements, and ut< won convincingly by 20 to 11 Tk P° Skoglunds were also beaten-dur. ing the morning's play. Ravenwood Still In On the lower Kaituna green n P. Herum (Auckland) cam, iar through ~the day without a lo» at He made the most of the good t i conditions and the fast green and ior improved as the day went on. N Mitchell (Karitane) on the Bal macewan green in the morning At one stage he was losing 14 1 to Mitchell, and the game finished = in Mitchell’s favour at 11-17. Ila bone then went on to lose hii second life to G. M. Ritchie (Ban nockburn), 17-23. One of the day’s upsets wa the double defeat of L. and S Franks (Balmoral). L. Franki skipped the winning pair in 1951 i Last year’s champion, H. I i Thompson (Whitiora)—lost a lift in an early game, but he had de cisive wins in his other match# to retain one life. A. W. Ball (St. Albans) 7 snatched a 22-21 victory frou le under the noses of the Franki ot brothers in a morning game. Tbi, Auckland pair had a 13-7 lead a hi the twelfth, but there was little E between the scores after Bal td notched two when L. Franks mis ’.a placed alb three of his bowls, iv Barron Beaten °‘ The Franks made amends bj 1 soundly defeating J. R. Milli 2 (Wakatipu), 28-12, but they wen W well beaten 19-12 by G. A. and lo W. E. Barron (Balclutha). 1 Still with one life intact, tbt « Barron brothers were responslblt » for the defeat of H. J. Thompson >u 13-17. Thompson was trailing 1-1 i' after seven ends.
