Magic Circle’s Sound Trial For Trentham

Magic Circle, a fit Riccarton light-weight in the Wellington Cup field, ran nine furlongs strongly 40ft out on the course proper at Riccarton on Saturday.

Ridden by an apprentice, G. Baldwin, he recorded lmin 58 4-ssec for the distance and 51 l-ssec for the last half mile. From the start he ran about a length behind Riverwood (R. B. Taggart) and on the outside. In the straight he reduced Riverwood’s lead to about a neck without any great show of exertion. G. W. Mein will be Magic Circle’s Cup rider. I. McClure will take the Count Rendered gelding north tomorrow. Jimmy Hill (J. Beck), galloping with a good weight up, beat Whiohau (C. T. Wilson) narrowly and Cheyenne (W. Hanlin) and Hunted (M. Gillanders) easily over six furlongs. Jimmy Hill finished his task impressively in lmin 18 4-ssec. He ran the last half mile in 51 4-ssec. Whiohau was four wide and slightly behind the others for a start so there was merit in his trial. He is a light-weight in the Anniversary Handicap at Trenthem.

Cheyenne has apparently had an easy time since his holiday racing; he blew after the gallop. Cheyenne and Whiohau will meet in the Anniversary Handicap at Trentham on Saturday. Matauwhi (J. Quigley) sprinted half a mile in 50 4-ssec. He shows a good deal of ability in training. So Cold (G. Baldwin) recorded 52 3-ssec for her half mile. Count Pierre (P. Graham) ran six furlongs unhurriedly in lmin 22 4-ssec. the last half mile in 54 2-ssec. After winning at Oamaru and recording a third at Washdyke he is a form runner for the Camp Handicap at Trentham. Breaker (R. McDonald) outran County Fermanagh (J. L. Coulter) over a mile, drawing away to a lead of a length and a half near the end. Breaker ran the mile in lmin 48 4-ssec and the last

half in 53 4-ssec. He is in the Te Marua Highweight on the first day at Trentham. Hopeful (J. L. Coulter) pickea up nearly three lengths from the half mile to lead Treasure Mine (R. McDonald) by half a length in their sprint. They worked up to speed going to the five furlongs and ran their last half mile in 51sec. ■,

The North Island lightweight, J. J. Glen, will ride Hopeful in the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham.

Glen rode Hopeful when he was a rather unlucky second to Gaytana at Washdyke on December 29.

Treasure Mine, a winner for the Murfitt stable at Washdyke, will run in the Camp Handicap at Trentham. J. L. Coulter will be her rider in this race, which is for apprentice riders.
