WEST INDIES 203 BEHIND

Sobers, Worrell Still In

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) BRIDGETOWN (Barbados), January 9.

G. Sobers, with 100 not out—his first century against England —and F. M. Worrell (91 not out) steered the first test to what seems an inevitable draw when they put on 177 in un unfinished fourth wicket partnership today.

At the close of play West Indies had made 279 for three, in reply to England’s first innings total of 482.

With two days left for play and the pitch as good as ever, only drastic changes in conditions or in the fortunes of either side would appear to offer an opportunity for a definite result.

Sobers and Worrell, who came together on Friday night with the score 102 for three, batted all day today, apart from a short period at the end when rain curtailed play. They added 165 runs to the overnight score of 114. The West Indies innings started dramatically. In Trueman’s second over he was called for a noball. Hunte hit it towards mid-on and both batsmen started for an unnecessary single. They stopped and turned back but Allen, running from wide mid-on, ran out McMorris with his short throw at the bowler’s wicket. Third Day’s Play England, resuming their first innings at 430 for seven, were all out for 482 at lunch on the third day. E. R. Dexter, the Sussex allrounder, was again England’s hero. He added 33 runs to his overnight 103 to finish with an unbeaten 136. Dexter lost his overnight partner, F. S. Trueman, with only nine runs added. Trueman was caught at the wicket off Ramadhin to give G. Alexander his fifth catch of the innings—a record for a West Indies test wicket-keeper. Scores:— ENGLAND First Innings G.
