Softball NORTH BEATS SOUTH

Final Game Of Festival

(New Zealana Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 10. The North Island sottball team, selected from provincial squads competing in the Beatty Cup tournament beat South Island 2-0 in the final of the two-week softball festival at Logan Park, Dunedin. North depended for the entire game on the hurling of the Hutt Valley pitcher, W. Massey, and that confidence was not misplaced. Although touched for four hits during the game, Massey did not issue a walk, and with two runners on base in the last innings, he got the next batter fo pop out to the catcher, then struck out the next two to end the game. Massey was backed by near-flaw-less fielding by the North Island team, which exhibited more polish on the field than the South Islanders Both of North’s runs came on throwing errors, one of commission and one of omission. A. Ballantyne pitched good softball for the South Island, and allowed only four hits, but his control went astray and he walked four batters during the game. Line scores:— South Island.—o 0 0 0 0 0 o—o (A. Ballantyne). North Island.—o 1 1 00 0 x—2 (W. Massey).
