SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SAMOANS
Expansion Of Programme “The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, December 28. Ten new scholarships have been awarded to Samoan children to attend New Zealand schools in a major expansion of the scholarship scheme in Samoa. This is in terms of an £BO,OOO grant made by the New Zealand Government. Most of the students will begin in senior forms at various colleges in New Zealand in February. One scholarship-holder is studying privately at Northland College. “Allied to this scheme," said the High Commissioner, Mr G. R. Powles, in Samoa, “is a special programme for the training of senior and other Samoan public servants.” Recommendations now under consideration included a six months’ training course in New Zealand for 15 senior public servants early next year. Additional printing trainees were being sent to Wellington, said Mr Powles. Four have already been selected and will leave Samoa at the end of next month. “Student boarding establishments will be built at Samoa College,” said Mr Powles. “Additional seconded teachers would be provided at New Zealand Government expense and most of the necessary housing for them would also be erected at New Zealand Government expense.” Another project was the establishment of a trades training centre in Western Samoa.
