FIRE IN MILL AT HASTINGS

Trucks, Buildings Destroyed (New, Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, December 28. Fire destroyed two six-wheel trucks, a 15cwt truck and a mobile crane at the C. and A. Odlin company’s mill and depot in Omahu road, Hastings, this afternoon. Part of a large workshop containing servicing equipment and the spare parts department building were also destroyed. When the alarm was given at 2.20 p.m. a heavy truck, a crawler tractor and a timber stacker were pulled from the burning building, but not before they were damaged. The Hastings Fire Brigade’s task was made more difficult by a petrol pump and a number of 40-gallon drums of oil being in the seat of the fire, but their explosion was prevented although smaller containers did explode. The nearby mill and stacks of timber were saved.
