TROTTING Jay-Ar Selected To Win Rangiora Stakes
Jay-Ar, one of three horses in the race trained at Yaldhurst by G. B. Noble, is selected to win the Rangiora Raceway Stakes, a race for two-year-old pacers at the Rangiora Trotting Club’s annual meeting today.
Jay-Ar, a gelding by Captain Adios from Spangled Scott, has drawn the second line. He has been one of the most impressive horses in parades in recent months, and with a reasonable run he should be too good for most of his rivals.
Noble will have a useful second string in Adios Duenna, a good second to Summit Road in the New Zealand Golden Slipper Stakes at Waimate last Saturday. Adios Duenna meets Summit Road on 12 yards more favourable terms this week, and she could finish in front of him this time. Noble’s other representative will be Valiant Sandy, a useful fourth at Waimate last week after breaking in the first furlong. Summit Road was an impressive winner at Waimate, but he will be set a difficult task from 12 yards. The First Lord colt is well forward, and he will only need a reasonable run in the early stages to earn a share of the stake. Southern Cross overcame a slow start at Waimate to finish a close third. If he can be kept closer to the leaders early, he could be one of the hardest to beat.
Hiflier and Seafield Lady were fifth and sixth respectively at Waimate last week and both could be improvers. Wekin and Robyn appeal most of the remainder. Likely Winner Cushie Doo should gain a first win for the season in the Cheviot Handicap. She was having only her third start for the season when she finished an unlucky third to Cheam and Lavengro over 13 furlongs at Addington on November 28. Cushie Doo had trouble obtaining racing room in the straight and the race was almost over before she worked into the open. Better served in the running today, she should run out a decisive winner. Bocasa was beaten narrowly by Lavengro in the Waimate Cup last week. The veteran Casanova gelding will not be set an easy task from 12 yards, but he is racing so consistently at present that he must be respected.
Dark Louise was having her first start after an enforced spell when she tired to thirteenth in the Waimate Cup. She is certain to be an improved mare this week and she looks to have bright prospects of reaching a place. Spring Jinks, Lucky Hazel. Hindu Princess and Te Par are others expected to add interest to the finish.
A double for on-course patrons will be run on the Parnassus Handicap and the Coldstream Handicap. Mighty Hanover will probably be favourite for the first with Medalla expected to be The hardest to beat in the second The T.A.B. double will be run on the Rangiora Cup and the Rangiora Challenge Stakes, Master Trick and Stormont forming a likely combination.
Master Trick is certain to receive stern opposition in his race from Schnapps and Lavengro. while Nadjehda, Twig and Utoss are entitled to respect. Sally Boy and Samantha are expected to offer most opposition to Stormont in the second leg, in which Mystic Star, Cheam and Tryst may also show to advantage Weather prospects are favourable and the track should be in splendid order, Acceptances:—
