JUDGE UPHOLDS SENTENCE

“Mean Sort Of Theft"

An appeal by lan John Brand, aged 23, against a sentence of corrective training for theft was dismissed by Mr Justice Macarthur in the Supreme Court yesterday. “This was a mean theft and on Brand’s record of 29 previous convictions, mostly on petty charges, the only suitable punishment is corrective training,” said Mr C. M. Roper for the Crown.

“In his appeal Brand had ask'ed for mercy and understanding but I submit he has received both in the past,” said Mr Roper. His Honour said he agreed that it was a mean sort of theft and he could see no reason for altering the sentence imposed by the Magistrate.
