OFFICIAL REPORT

(New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, December 18. The official report, issued, by the South Canterbury Woolbrokers’ j Association in conjunction with the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Commission, says:— The first main sale was held in Timaru today when an offering of 30,600 bales was placed before a full bench of buyers. The offering was drawn from the Mackenzie Country foothills and plains country in South Canterbury and included in the entry was a sprinkling of Ashburton and North Otago wools.

For the most part the wools were well grown and sound, but owing to the dry season which South Canterbury has experienced the wools were heavier in condition and contained more dust than has been the case for some years. Range of Styles

The bulk of the offering comprised medium to fine crossbreds, but there was also quite a number of fair sized Merino clips and some halfbred and Corriedale lines, as well as hogget wools. Some lines were very attractive, but the bulk of these showed the results of the season experienced.

The market was around recent rates for Merinos and inclined in sellers' favour for halfbreds and all descriptions of skirtings. Crossbreds, however, were a little erratic with prices in favour of the buyer. The buying was well spread. The Continent were the principal buyers with the French section taking the bulk of the oddments. Bradford was prominent on woolly hoggets and the local mills ■ on super lots in the Merino and halfbred range. The official range of prices is as follows
