AIRLINES IN AUSTRALIA

T.A.A. Seeks Third Electra

(N.Z Press Association—Copyright, MELBOURNE, December 18.

Trans-Australia Airlines is seeking the Federal Goverment’s permission to import a third Lockheed Electra prop-jet airliner. The application was made more than a fortnight ago, soon after the grant of a similar application by Ansett-A.N.A. The chairman of the National Airlines Commission (Sir Giles Chippendall) would not comment on this today, but Department of Civil Aviation officials said the report was true. T.A.A. is seeking its third Electra on the grounds that Ansett, with three to its two, would have an equipment advantage.

The economy fare proposal of Ansett-A.N.A.—another counter to T.A.A.’s prop-jet leadership—is still under discussion. No decision on this question is expected before next week. The Ansett application for permission to operate DC6B economy services has been placed before the Airline Rationalisator Coordinator (Mr D. G. Anderson) for decision. He has called for further discussions between the two airlines.
