BALLET TOUR PROFITS
Legal Battle Ended
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Dec. 18.
A two year and a half legal battle over the profits from Dame Margot Fonteyn’s 1957 Australian ballet tour ended today. Mr Justice Sholl, in the Supreme Court, granted judgment by consent for £12,000 in favour of Garnet H.' Carroll, the Melbourne theatrical entrepreneur.
Mr Carroll, who is in partnership with his wife and son originally claimed about £22,945 from James Thomas Laurie who was Dame Margot Fonteyn’s tour promoter and manager. Sydneyborn Laurie runs a London theatrical agency, James Laurie and Associates. Mr Carroll claimed that Laurie went back on an agreement by which he and Laurie were to share the profits.
At one stage all profits from the tour were frozen as the result of a Supreme Court order. Laurie left Melbourne before the necessary documents were served on him. For some time he contested the Victorian Supreme Court’s power to deal with the case, and he obtained a High Court ruling on the point. Mr Carroll’s counsel, Mr Arthur Adams, told Mr Justice Sholl today that the case had been settled. He asked for judgment for £12,000 in favour of Mr Carroll. Mr Laurie’s counsel, Mr Eric Hewitt, consented.
