Sladen Cup Race

The Sladen Cup was competed for on Saturday by keelers of the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club. There were 14 starters at the moles at 1.30 p.m. The race was won by Kia Ora (W. R. Bryson) for the first tin)* since it was presented in 1933 The wind was moderate north-east with little or no sea. and the course was to pile light, Scotts pile and Parson Rock buoy (all to port) twice round. Tucana (L. Bachop and C. A. Dickey) was sailed for the first time this c-ason after having eight inches added to her topsides and her mast stepped about a foot further aft. She took the lead early and was never headed at any stage. Bona (R. Norris) sailed a good race, holding her place with the bigger A class boats throughout. On the last run a fine battle developed among Mana (O. H. White). Gazelle (A. France), Kia Ora and Main Royal (N. Beaumont and P. C. Mangos), with Main Royal coming up from behind. The four juggled for position to round the mark, with a slight advantage to Main Royal, and the others only seconds behind. However, on the beat across to the moles Gazelle had a slight advantage and crossed the line half a boat’s length ahead of Main Royal, with Mana and Kia Ora in next. Results on corrected time were:— Fleet: Kia Ora 1, Bona 2, Mana 3. A Class.—Kia Ora 1, Mana 2, Dorade (D. N. Cresswell) 3. B Class.—Bona 1. Myth (J. Buick) 2. April (K Duggan) 3. Yesterday a launch race was held for points for the club championship. The course was from the moles to Parsons Rock buoy, Scott's pile, reef light, with the finish at the moles, a distance of five miles. The field was not as big as is usual. Results were:—lsa Lei (C. G, Balfour) 1, Nautilus (H. H. Hannah) 2.
