RETURN OF N.Z. BATTALION
Christchurch Claim Denied

When the Ist Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, returns to New Zealand on December 15 from Malaya, it will be the third at least to return as a complete unit from active service. Gisborne officers of the Maori Battalion today denied a Christchurch claim thta the Ist Battalion from Malaya would be the first New Zealand Army formation to return as a qomplete unit from active service.
According to a statement issued by the Gisborne branch of the 28th (Maori) Battalion Association, both the Maori Pioneer Battalion in World War I and the 28th (Maori) Battalion in World War II returned as complete units. The 28th (Maori) Battalion, which collected its reinforcements en route, marched through Wellington on its arrival back in New Zealand in January, 1946.
