Cocktail Party For Christmas

The Christchurch branch of the Overseas League held a Christmas cocktail party at the league rooms last evening. Guests were received by tbe president (Mr W. C. Mac Gibbon) and Mrs Mac Gibbon, and the chairman of the women’s committee, Mrs G. M. Bailey. Specially-invited guests were Sir Evelyn Wrench, founder of the league and founder of the English Speaking Union, his secretary, Miss Margaret Raynor, the oresident of the English Speaking Union (Mr W. Peers) and Mrs Peers, the president of the Royal Commonwealth Society (Mr R. J. G. Collins)) and Mrs Collins, and Mrs C. Collins, representing the Navy League. Bowls of brightly-coloured flowers decorated the room and red and white candles, surrqunded by cotton wool snow, holly and stalks of coloured balls made bright centrepieces for the supper tables. Father Christmas distributed gifts from the Christmas tree and later guests joined in the singing of Christmas carols. The function was organised by the women’s committee of the Overseas League. Mrs J. E. Carr was responsible for the floral arrangements.
