I.R.A. ATTACK IN EIRE
Arms Stolen From Barracks (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) BELFAST (Northern Island), December 4. A party from the outlawed Irish Republican Army was reported today to have carried out a midday arms raid on an Eire Army military barracks at Dundalk, County Louth. The raiders, according to messages reaching Belfast from the other side of the border dividing Ireland, were dressed in army overalls and completely surprised the guard. They cleared out the arsenal and made off with a haul of arms in a lorry. The Irish Republican Armypledged to end the division of Ireland by force —is an illegal organisation in both Northern Ireland and the Southern Irish Republic. Practically all its attacks in the last three years, however, have been across the border into Northern Ireland. Dundalk is 54 miles north of Dublin and 58 miles south of Belfast. The I.R.A. in the past has usually launched its arms raids in the “enemy territory’’ of Northern Ireland or in Britain itself.
It is unusual for it to act in its own country. The Irish Republic Government has ordered a general alert along the border between north and south and every available policeman has joined the search. An official statement reported from Dublin said Thomson sub-machine-guns, rifles and ammunition were missing from the barracks which is used for training the Irish Republic’s sparetime Territorial Army. The raiders, who were masked, escaped in cars and lorries.
