J. Macdonald Has Good Wins At Rugby Park

Good performances by the University runner, J. D. Macdonald, who won the senior 880 yards and three miles events, were a feature of the inter-club athletics meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday. Macdonald’s runs stood out at a meeting which was without most of the province’s leading athletes, who were competing in the triangular meeting in Dunedin.

Rain overnight and in the morning made the track heavy, but conditions were pleasant for the runners. Fields, especially in the senior events, were smaller than usual. As at previous meetings, all events were affected by the non-appearance of athletes who had been entered by their clubs.

Macdonald w’on the 880 yards with something to spare. For the first lap he ran in third-last position in a field of 10 with his club-mate. D. M. Taylor, just behind. At the end of the first lap both Macdonald and Taylor came round the field on the outside and. although Taylor was beaten off. Macdonald came through strongly to win from the Marist runner, B. Atkins, who had been with the leaders for the whole race.

For the first few laps of the three miles event Macdonald was the leader, running just ahead of a bunch of four other athletes. After two miles had been covered, the University runner led from N. Flemming, of Polytechnic, and C. Reece, of Technical. With one lap to go Reece was one yard ahead, with Flemming 20 yards further back. Reece and Macdonald cleared further out from the field in the last lap, and in the back straight Macdonald went well away from Reece, winning by about 40 yards. Best Sprinter Canterbury’s best sprinter, L. Jones (Technical), who had not been available for the triangular contest, won his sections of the 75 yards and the 220 yards events in good style. In the 220 yards he was followed home by C. Courtney and B. Rowman. In the other section of this event the Rugby players, J. Morrisey and V. Sykes, both running for the High Schools' club, had a good tussle. In his section of the 75 yards Jones was very closely followed home by the promising High Schools' runner A. Steel. Steel held Jones to a margin of half a yard at the finish. Later in the afternoon, when this pair were again in opposition when running the last legs for their teams in the senior relay. Steel again pressed Jones. Jones received his baton slightly before Steel, and went only very slightly further ahead in the last run. The small margins which separated the runners as they finished in the 10-mile road race were a tribute to the handicappers. The first five to finish were actually all doing their last round of Rugby Park at the same time, and the next two had entered the ground before the fourth runner had crossed the finishing line. The veteran C. C. Gordon (Presbyterian) still held the lead at halfway, but the Shirley runner, K. McKinstrey, led the field home. Another Shirley runner. B. Turner, took fastest time and R. Earnshaw, also from the Shirley club, took second placing in the race and also second-fastest time.

B. Blackwell (Westonian) took three victories in other events in the senior grade. These were in the 120 yards hurdles, the high jump and the hop. step and jump. A Harbott (Marist) won the discus and B Leadbetter, of University, was unopposed to win the hammer throw.

Steel won his section of the 100 yards in the junior grade without difficulty, in 10.5 sec, a good time considering the state of the track. Second and third behind Steel were other promising runners. R. Pask (Marist) and G. Pool (Technical). W. Kennedy (Polytechnic) returned the good time of 4min 35.55ec for the junior mile. Fields in the women’s events were much smaller than usual. K. Mackenzie, of Toe H, won the only two flat events contested in the senior women's section, and was also in the winning relay team.

C. Rolton (Technical) again gave some very good performances in the under-14 women’s section. She won the long jump with a leap of 13ft lOJin, which was less than one foot behind the winning distance in this event in the women’s under 18 grade. She also won the 75 yards under 14, in 9.7 sec, another good performance. Abbreviations used in the results are:— C. Canterbury; A, Anglican; CC, Christ's College; HS. High Schools; M, Marist: N. 8..
