Literacy Rate In India

Literacy in India has gone up by more than 100 per cent. —from 16.6 per cent, in 1951 to 40.7 per cent., according to a limited survey conducted this year. Education among women seemed to be progressing at a much faster pace than among men. The survey showed almost a fourfold increase in female literacy from 7.9 per cent, of the population in 1951 to 28.8 per cent. Male literacy had gained from 24.9 per cent, to 51.7 per cent.
