Suspended Sentence For Chemist

A Bordeaux Court yesterday sentenced Jacques Cazenave, a 59-year-old chemist, charged with the manslaughter of 73 children with a baby powder alleged to have contained arsenic, to a suspended sentence of 18 months’ imprisonment. He was also fined about £142 and ordered to pay damages. The prosecution had asked for a two-year gaol sentence for the chemist, who was in charge of production and sale of the powder. Baumol, from 1951. The charge read in Court said Cazenave had involuntarily caused the death of the babies with his talcum powder by “clumsiness, imprudence, negligence, and failure to observe regulations.”
