EXERCISE ON MT. EGMONT
Civilians Combine With Army (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 5. Bush on the eastern slopes of Mount Egmont became part of the Malayan jungle yesterday for civilians and about 160 territorials, who plunged into it for a week-end jungle navigation exercise conducted by the Ist Battalion, Wellington. West Coast and Taranaki Regiment. It was the first time in the regiment’s history, and only the second time in New Zealand, that civilians have been invited to take part in an exercise of this type.
Carrying rifles and packs weighng from 251 b to 301 b, the men were divided into six sections. The exercise, which finished this afternoon, was completely tactical. t ♦ Civilians were scattered among the territorials participating in the exercise. This afternoon those taking part were taken to the Stratford Army hall, where lessons learnt during the exercise were discussed. The men carried with them special 24-hour food ration packs successfully used by the Army in Malaya. They contain enough food for three good meals.
