Second Round Results

Avon, Selwyn, Lichfield and Avonside I recorded their second victories when the second round of the Canterbury Table Tennis Association’s first grade summer competition was played. Other teams to win their second round matches were University I and Wallabies.

Avon beat Star by 9 matches to 3, although the winning side could probably have won more easily. N. B. Radford again won his three matches for Avon, and M. A. Cox won two singles. G. W. Makinson was the best player for Star, his stylish attack bringing him wins over Cox and K. F. Stevenson. Avon won the three doubles matches very narrowly. University I beat South Brighton by 7 matches to 5 in an interesting contest. South Brighton at one stage led by four matches to three, but the University team won four of the last five matches. Alabaster won his three singles matches for South Brighton with good attacking play, and R. Nesbitt had two victories. v

T. M. Minehan, who has transferred back to Christchurch from Timaru, won two singles matches for University I, while R. G. Hart and J. O. Moen each had won the three doubles matches, two very easily, and this gave the winning margin. The Selwyn players H. Holt and C. B. Lockhart gave further evidence of their improvement when their side beat Linwood, 8-4. Both these players won their three matches. Holt, an attacking left-hander, beat R. L. Sandford comfortably in the third game of their match. R. Harland won two singles for Selwyn. The Linwood players won the three doubles matches. Lichfield had a comfortable win over Eagles, with R. Prisk and R. T. Oakley each winning three singles. P. A. Williamson won the only singles match for Eagles when he beat A. Whittaker, while G. Port and Mrs L. Dodds won a doubles for the losing team.

Improved form was shown by the Wallabies players when they beat Avonside II by the surprising margin of 11 matches to one. Strengthened by the inclusion of N. C. O’Brien, Wallabies won their first 10 matches on end. R. L. Hulston and O’Brien each won three singles, while T. B. Gillard lost only to B. Kendall. In the closest match of the evening Avonside I beat University II by 16 games to 14, with six matches each. University had a slight edge in the singles, with D. D. M. Stewart winning three and D. Hill two, but Avonside won two oof the three doubles to take the contest. J. Pierce won two singles for Avonside. Results were: Avon 9, Star 3; University I 7, South Brighton 5; Selwyn 8, Linwood 4; Lichfield 10, Eagles 2; Wallabies 11, Avonside H 1; Avonside I 16, University II 14.
