SOMES ISLAND 'PHONE CABLE
Service To IJegin Next Month "The Preus" Special Service WELLINGTON, November 24. Providing the residents of. Somes Island with a more .satisfactory telephone service to the mainland, approximately , five miles of cable has been laid in the Wellington harbour by the coaster, Te Aroha. Because of various delays, in loading the vessel, it was not possible to lay two runs of cable on the same day as originally intended. The weather was fine arifl no serious difficulties were encountered during the laying operations, which were assisted by a Department of Agriculture launch. The old telephone cable serving the island had been in use 1 since 1926, the year when a previous cable was seriously damaged by sand dredges operating off Petone. The second cable periodically required attention at the Hutt road end where the cable armouring wires had been badly chafed by the action of the waves rubbing them against the rocks, and further repair, work was considered by the Post Office to be uneconomical. The cable is now practically ready for service, but will not be put into use until the new Wellington telephone directories become effective on December 18.
