ENGLISH RETAIL CHAIN CUTS Id OFF PRICE OF BUTTER

(Special Correspondent NJSJ»JL.)

LONDON, Nov. 23. One large provision firm, with shops throughout the south and west of England, has cut Id off the price of its special blend of “Empire butter,” making it 4s 3d per lb. Tooley street (wholesale) prices were unchanged today. A section of buyers declined a shipment from Denmark in case they were left with it in their stores. If the price of butter continued at its present high level many people would be forced to revert to the use of margarine, says an article in the “British Farmers”

published by the National Farmers’ Union. “It is in the long-term interest of dairy producers not to lose custom won from margarine manufacturers last year, and some means must be found of ensuring that butter prices are maintained at a level reasonable to both customers and producers. There is an upper price limit, beyond which the housewife will tend to cut down on butter—and it is not in the interest of either the home or overseas producer for her to stop buying his products.” The article said the world dairy industry would benefit If arrangements could be made to keep prices within agreed limits. This was why the N.F.U. continued to press for an international commodity agreement on butter.
