Holiday Visit To South Island \

A British economic expert and an authority on international economics, Sir Donald MacDougall, arrived in Christchurch yesterday for a brief South Island tour with his wife before going to Wellington for the conference of the New Zealand Association of Economists, and to meet officials of the Reserve Bank.

Sir Donald MacDougall is a visiting professor at the Australian National University, but his six months there is almost completed and he will be returning shortly to Oxford, where he is Official Fellow of Nuffield College. '•*'' s ii'.. From 1040 to 1045, Sir Donald MacDougall was in the British Prime Minister’s statistical branch, as chief assistant, and from 1951 to 1953 was chief adviser. In 1948-49 he was economics director with O.E.E.C. in Paris. He has been a member of the council qf the Royal Economic Society since 1950. Sir Donald MacDougall said he and Lady MacDougall were going to be tourists in the South Island until the time came for him to go to the Wellington conference. They had not been to New Zealand before.
