ADENAUER ENDS LONDON VISIT
Relations “On Much Better Footing” (NX Press Assoctattow-CopnoM) (Rec. 1030 pan.) LONDON, November 20. British and German officials believe that relations between the two countries are on a much better footing as a result of the visit to London of the West German Chancellor, Dr. Adenauer.
Before leaving London, Dr. Adenauer told a press conference that one subject for discussion at an EastWest summit conference would certainly be selfdetermination for the whole of Germany. Dr. Adenauer also told the conference that he and Mr Macmillan were in complete agreement on the political aspects of disarmament.
It was believed In London that the two statesmen had agreed with Washington reports that late April would be the best time for a summit conference with the Soviet Union. There was a change of atmosphere at London’s Victoria Station when the West German party left for Gatwick Airport. The silence of their arrival three days ago gave way to cheers and a rousing version of “For he’s a jolly good fellow” for the Chancellor.
The Russian news agency, Tass, reported that the absence of a communique after the MacmillanAdenauer talks was being interpreted in London as an admission of their failure. The agency's London correspondent, M. Fedorov, said: “Local political circles interpret this decision (against issuing a communique) as an admission of the failure of the. British Prime Minister and the West German Chancellor to straighten out the serious differences existing between the two countries on a number of problems.”
