'WAIMATE 50' IN FEBRUARY
PROVIDED the weather is kind the "Waimate 50” car race and its supporting programme, to be held on February 13, 1960, already promises to eclipse the successful inaugural meeting earlier this year.
A well attended public meeting under the chairmanship of the Mayor (Mr A. J. Mcßae), discussed many aspects of the race, and
in view of experiences early this year, many improvements have already been planned and others brought forward.
The timetable for the day is practice, 8 a.m. to 9.30 a.m.; motor cycle open scratch race, 10.30 a.m.; sports car race, 11.10 a.m.; saloon cars, up to 1550 c.c., 12 noon; New Zealand specials and racing car race, 12.30 p.m.; “Waimate 50” South Island championship, 2 p.m.; Waimate motor-cycle classic, 3,25 p.m; saloon cars over 1550 c.c., 4 p.m. Straw
One thousand bales Of straw and the necessary drums have been ordered and the social and prize giving ceremonies will be held on similar lines to the last occasion.
More traffic officers will be available to control traffic.
The hairpin bend has been extended about one chain. Cars will now turn in the race at the Mill road comer and not by the railway goods yard gate as earlier this year. Spectator Control
Spectator control is to be further tightened. Break periods between races will be for admission to vantage points only. Once in an enclosed area spectators will not be allowed to change positions on the circuit; none will be permitted on the roof tops of buildings. The pits and grid will be in the same positions as for the 1959 race and it is hoped to have cars on view on the Friday evening before the event. Maps of the circuit will be printed in the newspapers showing spectator zones.
