PEGASUS CREST FOR ARANUI HIGH SCHOOL
The Pegasus crest for the Aranui High School (illustrated) was confirmed by the interim Board of Governors yesterday. The concept had been submitted earlier by the headmaster (Mr W. J. A. Brittenden), but final work had still to be done on the design. The symbol of Pegasus, the Greek mythological flying horse, had been chosen because of its apposite association with Hippocrene, the fount of the muses, Mr Brittenden reported. On Mount Helicon, where he first , landed on earth, Pegasus struck the earth with his hoof and the spring of the muses gushed forth. There was also an association with Bellerophon, whom Pegasus helped in the destruction of Chimera, a terrible monster with lion’s head, goat’s body, and dragon’s tail. Bellerophon’s reaction t othis help incidentally contained a warning that gifts and talents should not be wrongly used, Mr Brittenden said. The fact that Aranui High School could be said to be on Pegasus Bay was simply a happy coincidence. To accompany Pegasus, Professor L. G. Pocock has suggested
“Ardua non veriti” (Fearing not the heights) as a motto. Mr Brittenden said this admirably expressed the desire that the school should not be afraid of difficulties but aspire to the highest The design of the crest and motto, drawn by Mr R. B. LovellSmith, would be worn on blazer pockets and (without the motto) on caps and hats. Mr H. V. Clark, of Wellington, had offered to incorporate the crest into a formal coat-of-arms for more restricted use.
