Airport Manager’s House

Sir, —You kindly printed a letter headed ‘‘Departmental Houses,” which I signed with my usual nom-de-plume. The letter was written as a genuine inquiry from a ratepayer. It is my belief that the City Council as a public body has a responsibility to give the facts through the newspapers to such inquiries as contained in my letter. Others, like myself, who reside in the Christchurch City rating area (unlike Mr Guthrey) and who see our rates increasing year by year have the right, surely, to ask questions and receive a temperate acknowledgement. To refresh Mr. Guthrey’s memory my questions were as follows:—(1). What is the cost of the airport manager’s house with improvements? (2) Value of land and area? (3) What rent and service charges are to be made? (4) What was the price Of the car provided for the manager’s use? A bigger and better airport, but please not at gold brick prices to the ratepayers.—Yours, etc., A. N. OTHER. November 10, 1959.

Other’ requires has already been discussed in open council and published in the newspapers, and is also readily available from the City Council offices. I am not prepared to enter into a discussion through the newspapers with a person who has not the courage to sign his own name.”]
