Harewood Airport
Sir, —I was interested to see your report of remarks I made at a recent election meeting concerning the City Council’s share of the costs of running Harewood airport. I feel your readers would also wish to be informed that a further anomaly in the present position concerning Harewood is . that the Christchurch City Council contributes a substantial sum by way of rates to the Paparua County because part of the aerodrome (including the terminal building) is located in the Paparua County. As Paparua rates are based on capital values, the more the City Council spends at Harewood, the greater the dividend to the Paparua County, and the greater the cost to the ratepayers of Christchurch City. I consider that this is a matter calling for close investigation, possibly by a commission which could examine the whole question of airport finances throughout New Zealand. —Yours, etc., HAMISH G. HAY. November 17, 1959.
