INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL
Kirkwood Avenue Committee
An interim committee for the new intermediate school in Kirkwood avenue, Riccarton, was elected at a meeting of parents in the Ham road School. About 70 parents from the Ham Road and Riccarton Schools’ areas attended.
The .school will open at the beginning of next year. Contributing schools for the new school are Riccarton and Ham Road, which will abolish Forms I and II to provide approximately 380 pupils for 1960, leaving 100 vacancies, Mr R. K. Milne, Canterbury Education Board representative, said that these vacancies could be fiUed from other schools. An intermediate school had flexible boundaries, he said. Replying to parents’ questions on the intermediate schools system, Mr A D. Coates, headmaster for the new school, said he considered that intermediate schools provided more adequate education for early adolescents. A number of parents confirmed this view. Mr Milne told parents of children who would be spending only the one Form n year at the school next year that the children would not be required to wear the official uniform. A committee of three women was set up to investigate the colours of the school uniforms. Suggestions made for the naming of the school Included “Riccarton,” “Deans” or “Kirkwood Avenue.” The name was not decided on.
The school committee elected was:—Chairman, Mr W. J. Hollobon; secretary, Mrs R. J. Whltta: treasurer, Mr F. Hay; committee, Messrs D. AUingham, J. E. Rountree, J. Norton, W. Ricketts, R. G. Jolly, Mrs C. Parfit
