CANCER RESEARCH POST

Scientist From Lincoln Appointed "The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN, November 17. To carry out its programme of cancer research more effectively, the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society has appointed another research scientist to its department in the radiotherapy block at Wakari Hospital. He is Mr P. Fitzgerald, formerly of the Crop Research Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research at Lincoln. He will assist the head of the research establishment, Dr. John Read. The research carried out by Dr. Read deals mainly with the effect of radiation on living cells and both the biological and chemical aspects are studied. Mr Fitzgerald, who graduated M.Sc, at Canterbury University College with first-clas honours in botany, carried out research work for a period at Adelaide University. He has recently completed work for his Ph.D. degree. Dr. Read said that Mr Fitzgerald was a cytologist who studied the microscope appearance of cell nuclei and chromosomes. He was studying the .effect of radiation on the cell chromosomes .
