PAKISTAN FAILS

Mackay Takes Six Wickets DACCA, November 17. In its second innings in ths first test today, Pakistan was dismissed for 134, leaving Australia to make 109 to win. At tea Australia had made 21 for the loss of one wicket, and appeared certain to win. From four for 74 at the start of play, Pakistan slumped to six for 108 at lunch. So tight was the bowling, that Benaud had silly mid-on about two yards from the bat for his and Mackay’s bowling to Shujaud Din. Duncan Sharpe, who was severe on anything loose from Benaud, scored 22 of the 34 runs scored so far today, and six of the others were extras. Play started 15 minutes late, because of a delay in preparing the wicket and laying the mat. Benaud sent down a top-spin-ner which came quickly off the mat and trapped Wazir leg before wicket When the wicket-keeper Imtiaz joined Sharpe, the last recognised batting pair were together, and Sharpe decided to go for runs. He hit Benaud for 4 to square leg and in the next over hooked a shorter ball for another 4. Davidson resumed bowling after lunch, and Sharpe turned the first ball to square leg for a single. 1 P. Burge came to silly mid-on, and L. Favell to forward shortleg, crouching almost shoulder-to-shoulder 10 feet from Shujaud Din’s bat. R. N. Harvey at slip, and Benaud at short third man completed the close ring around the batsman. Play was tense, and the first two hours produced only 35 runs. Shujaud had been 70 minutes at the wicket without scoring, when he off-drove Davidson for tour, the ball just beating N. O’Neill to the boundary. Any hopes that the partnership would rescue Pakistan, ended in the next over when Mackay had Sharpe lbw for 35. This was the wicket Australia wanted. Israr All joined Shujaud, and this was the signal for Shujaud to start hitting, as Pakistan were still only 92 runs ahead. He hit Davidson for three, and drove Mackay for four -through the covers. Pakistan was determined to fight to the last man.

Benaud ended the partnership when he bowled Israr All, who played over a good length ball. Fazal Mahmood swung with more energy than direction and scored • twos off Benaud and Mackay. The score mounted slowly until Mackay took Fazal’s wicket Fazal went to drive and hit a simple return catch to Mackay. This was Mackay’s sixth wicket.

Benaud brought the innings to a close when Nasimul Ghani faced a first ball from the Australian captain. The batsman hit hard and high, and McDonald, running in, took the catch about half-way from the boundary. Pakistan was all out for 134 The Australian players stood back and clapped Mackay as he led them from the field. His great bowling of six wickets for 42 runs had wrecked Pakistan's second innings.
