LAOS TOUR PROTEST

Soviet Action At U.N. (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) NEW YORK, November 10. The Soviet Union tonight again criticised the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr Dag Eammarskjold, for the initiative he had taken in troubled Laos. In a statement circulated at United Nations headquarters today, the Soviet delegation said Mr Hammarskjold’s action in summoning a top Finnish economist to Laos to conduct an economic study was “designed to cover by the name of the United Nations further interference of the Western Powers in Laos.” v The Soviet statement said that the latest action could “only make the existing situation more complicated.” When Mr Hammarskjold announced his decision to fly to Laos last Tuesday, the Soviet delegation said the trip could only “complicate” the problem. This comment was regarded as a “mild protest.”

There was no immediate comment on the latest Soviet criticism. Officials said Mr Hammarskjold would return to New York next Saturday.
