Figure For End Of September
The population of New Zealand on September 30, 1959, was 2,343,392, an increase of 12,266 on the figure at June 30, 1959, according to a statement issued by the Government statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker).
The population is made up of 1,178,381 males and 1,165,011 females and includes 155,546 Maoris. In the quarter ended September 30 the excess of births over deaths was responsible for an increase of 9614. Migration, including the movement of armed services, showed that arrivals exceeded departures by 2652. For the corresponding quarter in 1958 the natural increase was 9049, and arrivals exceeded departures by 6420.
The above figures exclude Island Territories and the Trust Territory of Western Samoa. Latest available population figures for these areas are as follows:—Cook Islands, 17,654 at December 31, 1958; Niue Island, 4759 at June 30, 1959; Tokelau Island, 1802 at June 30, 1959 and Western Samoa, 104,547 at June 30, 1959.
