Tyres With Detachable Treads

new type of tyre with detachable treads, shown at' right, is being manufactured by the Italian flrm of Pirelli. To be released on the world’s markets next year, it will eriable a motorist to fit different treads for summer and winter, without going to the expense of buying complete new tyres. The treads consist of three reinforced rubber rings which fit into grooves on the surface of the tyre. To fit them in place, the tyre is slightly deflated and the treads fitted into place. The tyre is then blown up to its normal pressure and the treads are firmly fixed in position. The company says the new tyres will cost a little more than the usual type, but replacement treads will only be about one third the cost of a whole new tyre.
