DROWNINGS IN SEPTEMBER

“Increase Cause For Concern”

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 12.

The total of eight deaths by drowning in September was almost three times the figure for September, 1958. and was the highest since 1956, which was one of the worst years of recorded drownings, said the secretary of the National Water Safety Committee (Mr S. V. Higgins) today. The sudden increase in September gave cause for concern to all associated with the national effort to prevent these deaths, said Mr Higgins. “Once again the greatest toll was of five children under five years of age, all of whom died at or near their own homes, in a reservoir, a gutter, a tidal drain, a trough, and a bath,” said M v Higgins.
