HIGH OCTANE PETROL

‘Provision Would

Be Costly’

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 12. There is no immediate prospect of petrol with a higher octane rating becoming, available in New Zealand, according to a letter from the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Hollowav) read at tonight’s meeting of the council of the Automobile Association (Wellington). Mr Holloway said that the provision of 90 octane motor spirit would involve the additional expenditure of overseas exchange of £700.000 in petrol costs alone. The cost of necessary equipment would also be very heavy. Adequate supplies of 79 octane and of 90 octane petrol would be available when the oil refinery was in production, he said. The council decided to continue its efforts to improve the octane rating of petrol by having the present rating raised.
