RUMOUR IN KENYA

Promise To

Party

(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) NAIROBI, October 12. A Kenya politician has denied a “mischievous and misleading story” now current in Nairobi that the Colonial Secretary (Mr Lennox-Boyd) had conditionally promised the British Government’s support for the Rightwing United Party.

According to reports circulating in Nairobi, Mr Lennox-Boyd told one of the United Party leaders in London recently that the British Government would approve the party’s policy provided it had the support of the overwhelming majority of Europeans in Kenya. Mr Reginald S. Alexander-, a leading member of the moderate New Kenya Group, said: “It is a gross distortion to suggest in this country that Mr LennoxBoyd has given any indication whatsoever that any Britisn Government would ever accept the policies of the United Party.” The United Party, led by Group Captain Leslie Briggs, a former European Minister without portfolio, is supported by many upcountry farmers and settlers. Its policy is based on greater evolution to local government and 't advocates retention of European control over the White Highlands. continuance of monoracial education, and dissolution of the Legislative Council and its replacement by a purely advisory council.
