RAIN OVER PROVINCE
Heavier Falls Needed
Thunder, lightning and scattered showers were experienced over most of Canterbury yesterday although the bad weather did not spread as far north as Kaikoura. Hail fell at Oamaru, Timaru, Ashburton and Darfield, although the only report of an extensive fall came from Lagmhor, where three inches of hail covered roads.
A good shower of rain is still needed for wheat crops, although in most areas they are in quite good condition.
The main need for rain is to bring away a flush of spring growth. With good lambing percentages in most areas because of absence of storms, feed is short. Unless there is a good fall of rain in the next few weeks, there will be little pasture available for hay production and even less to shut up for small seeds. Only 12 points of rain fell in Christchurch up to 6 p.m. yesterday. There were showers in the morning and rain began about 4.30 p.m. in time to provide a miserable ride for homewardbound cyclists.
