SENIOR ROAD TITLE
Ganderton Wins At Auckland (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 4. Two riders from the West Coast (North Island) Centre rode together the first 104 miles of the New Zealand road cycling championships, gradually leaving 38 other competitors behind, shook hands wit* a quarter ol a mile to go, and sprinted the last 300 yards to <he finish and the title at Glenbrook on Saturday. The winner was A. Ganderton, a 19-year-old from Palmerston North, who was riding his first senior national road championship. He beat the Wanganui rider, G. Lankow, winner of many New Zealand road tit cTanderton rode an excellent race, basing his finishing tactics on the fact that he had outsprinted Lankow previously Conditions for the race on the 11.6 mile Glenbrook circuit were far from good, and Ganderton’s time for 104.4 miles was relatively slow, 4hr 44min 57scc. Onlv 13 of the 40 starters comnleted the course, and four of those that did finish were half an hour behind the winner. The riders had to contend with a strong gusty wind and sometimes heavy rain.
