MODERN GONDOLA LIFT SYSTEM

Possible Installation At Mt. Wakefield

A modern gondola ski lift system similar to that now operating at Gastaad, the well known Swiss snow resort, may soon be installed at Mount Wakefield, which is exactly opposite and facing the Hermitage at Mount Cook. This week-end, Mr Geoffrey Hughes, of Sydney, will commence a three-weeks’ tour of New Zealand snowfields to advise on the provision of the latest mechanical aids for skiers. He will discuss the Mount Wakefield project with the Tourist Hotels Corporation and will exchange ideas with local bodies for attracting more overseas snow tourists to Australia and New Zealand. Mr Hughes is a director of a company that specialises in the buiding of T-bar lifts on Australia’s snow slopes. An outstanding skier, he has been actively concerned with the development of Thredbo Valley, Mount Kosciusko, New South Wales, which, almost overnight has changed from a wilderness into a modern spow resort. It is expected that in the company’s New Zealand operations local materials and labour will be used.
