Fishing Conditions Poor

After being in light flood on Wednesday night, the Waimakariri river had dropped to about 2ft above normal by 4 p.m. yesterday. Although the river level is dropping slowly, it is still expected to be in fresh over the week-end. Conditions for whitebaiters and other fishermen will be poor. The flood in the river came after a rainfall of 7|in at Arthur’s Pass on Tuesday night, the river rising to a peak of about sft at the Main North road bridge just before midnight on Wednesday. Overnight rainfall in the Waimakariri catchment area was 2Jin to 8 a.m. yesterday, with a further I.2in falling up to 4 p.m. There was still light rain falling at Arthur’s Pass at 4 p.m. yesterday, the sky being heavily overcast.
