HYDATIDS BILL

Measure Before House (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 17. One hundred and ten persons had died from hydatids in New Zealand since 1950, the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Skinner) told the House of Representatives tonight, when the Hydatids Bill was introduced and read a first time. Mr Skinner said the bill was one of the few measures put into operation before the legislation was introduced in Parliament: local bodies throughout the country had already set up voluntary organisations to deal with hydatids. There had been 80 or 90 cases of hydatids a year since 1950. though the number of deaths had declined. There had been 772 cases involving humans since 1950.

The bill gives legislative authority to the National Hydatids Council, which was set up last year.

It also provides for the appointment of hydatids inspectors, makes treatment of dogs compulsory, and makes it compulsory for dog-owners to carry out the inspectors’ directions within a month.
