ASHBURTON STRUCK BY SEVERE GALE.—A strong north-westerly gale hit Ashburton late on Tuesday evening and brought down trees, power lines, chimneys, roofs, and several buildings. The gale was the worst in Ashburton for many years, and, at times, reached 70 miles an hour. LEFT: A hole torn in the roof of a building at the corner of South street and Chalmers avenue. The iron from the roof was carried nearly 50 yards to the opposite side of a nearby street. RIGHT: This truck was badly damaged when the shed it was parked in collapsed. Another section of the roof can be seen in the background.
