WOOL BUYING BY JAPAN

Hint Of Increase Given (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 16. A strong hint of bigger Japanese wool buying in the coming season was given today in Auckland by Mr Hiroshi Takahashi of the Nitto Shipping Company, Tokyo. He has arrived from the head office to be. the company’s representative in New Zealand for a year. Mr Takahashi said his companywill use 10.000 ton freighters in the coming wool season in place of its smaller cargo liners on regular service between Japan and New Zealand. “With Japan expected to buy more wool the bigger ships are coming in to load these cargoes at major New Zealand ports and also general cargo.” he said. “The small 5000-ton cargo liners would not be big enough to handle both wool and general cargo. The freighters will maintain the monthly service from December to February.” In the 1958-59 season Japan bought about 4 per cent, in volume of the wool exported from New Zealand. She took 62,300 bales compared with 35.100 in 1957-58. Asked about exports from Japan to New Zealand, Mr Takahashi said the Tokuwa was due on Friday with the biggest cargo this year in a Nitto ship. The 1800-ton cargo is five times bigger than any cargo last year and exceeds this year’s cargoes by 300 tons. He said the Shinkai Maru was coming specially from Japan to Nelson to load 1,300.000 super feet of logs in October.
