CRICKET AT MAKOGAI

Even blind men “enjoy” cricket at the Makogai Leper Station, in the Fiji group. So keen is the interest of all patients in the game that the blind men are led to the ground, where friends give them a running commentary on the play.

There are five cricket teams at Makogai, all playing with equipment provided by the New Zealand Lepers’ Trust Board. The Secretary of the Trust (Mr P. J. Twomey) has watched the Makogai patients play cricket, and the enthusiasm he saw on a recent visit to the island has prompted him to appeal to any sports clubs which may have surplus gear.
