Rejection By U.S. WASHINGTON, Sept. 15. The United States State Department today issued a statement rejecting a Soviet proposal for the reconvening of the 1954 Geneva conference on IndoChina to consider the Laos crisis. The State Department reiterated its support for the United Nations Security Council’s action in sending a fact-finding mission to Laos. The statement was Issued soon after the arrival tn Washington of the Soviet Prime Minister (Mr Khrushchev!. It said that the Soviet proposal seemed to be “unnecessary and disruptive” and ignored the authority of the world body. “We believe that the recent action of the Security Council opens the best avenue to tranquilising the situation in Laos, and. though the Soviet Union opposed the Security Council action, we believe all United Nations nations will come to see the merit of this approach to peace in Laos,” the State Department said.
