THE LENIN
First Atomic Icebreaker MOSCOW, September 16 The Soviet atomic icebreaker Lenin yesterday weighed anchor and sailed for its maiden voyage, the Soviet news agency. Tass. reported. . The first atom-powered surface ship is powered by three nuclear reactors, and is claimed to be able to stay at sea for several years without renewing fuel supplies. The 16,000-ton vessel is said to be the most powerful icebreaker ever built, with 44,000 horse power engines enabling her to move continuously in solid ice fields 6ft thick. The Lenin has been anchored in the River Neva for the last three days
Tass said the Lenin was sailing into the Baltic on her first trial run She had been fitting out and undergoing trials since her launching in December. 1957.
